MERI is pleased to announce the launch of its report tomorrow on the Hashd al-Shaabi entitled
‘The Hashd al-Shaabi and Iraq: Subnationalism and the State’
by Dylan O’Driscoll and Dave van Zoonen.
The report assesses the current role of the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) in the provision of security in Iraq, arguing that dealing with the multiple competing subnationalisms within it is ‘one of the most pressing issues’ to address following the defeat of Islamic State (IS). With this in mind, the report analyses the various groups within the PMF and presents recommendations to counter the dangers they pose to Iraqi unity post-IS, including comprehensive suggestions for DDR (Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration) and SSR (Security Sector Reform) strategies that could be implemented.
