Mr. Kazuya Nashida, Japan’s Ambassador to Iraq, highlighted that Kurdistan Region and Iraq offers investment opportunities for Japanese companies, which remain interested in spite of the current security obstacles. He emphasized Japan’s contribution to the process of reconstruction and nation building in Iraq, where Japan has donated $7.5 billion in grants and loans since 2003. He reasoned that, due to constitutional restrictions, his country cannot provide any military assistance to Iraq but Japan has helped with humanitarian assistance, especially with the plight of IDPs. Ambassador Nashida was of the opinion that the liberalization of the economy and a reduction of the role of the public sector are necessary elements for economic development in Kurdistan Region.
