Dr. Farhan Hanif Siddiqi is Research Fellow at the Middle East Research Institute (MERI). His research interests include ethnicity, nationalism, ethnic conflict and security and conflict dynamics in the Middle East and South Asia. After obtaining a BA in International Relations, Farhan studied the Theory and History of International Relations at the London School of Economics (LSE). He then returned to Karachi University for completing a PhD in 2010 in ‘The State and Politics of Ethnicity in Pakistan’.
Prior to joining MERI, Farhan was Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations at the University of Karachi, where his research focused on two under-researched aspects of ethnic conflict, namely (a) the role of intra-ethnic disagreement in structuring and weakening ethnic demands and (b) the role of centralizing centralising state interests in provoking regionalized ethnic demands. One of strongest features of Farhan’s work lay in his treatment of intra-ethnic competition and his attention to the ways in which this intra-ethnic competition opens up new opportunities for ‘divide-and-rule’ strategies on the part of official state actors.
Farhan is the author of the book, The Politics of Ethnicity in Pakistan: The Baloch, Sindhi and Mohajir Ethnic Movements (Routledge, 2012). Among his other numerous research publications are, Regional Security Dynamics in the Middle East: The Problematic Search for a Regional Leader, General Elections in Pakistan 2013: The Consolidation of Democracy, and Security Dynamics in Pakistani Balochistan: Religious Activism and Ethnic Conflict in the War on Terror.
Farhan is a member of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) and Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN).
