Elisabeth Decrey Warner, Executive President and Co-Founder of Geneva Call, accompanied by Ann-Kristin Sjöberg, Program Director of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, and Jabar Yawar, Secretary General of the Ministry of Peshmerga, discuss compliance of armed forces with international humanitarian law (IHL) in the context of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG). To date the KRG has no mechanism in place to address the violation of the principles of IHL. As the KRG struggles to assert its independence, and establish peace and democracy, the importance of respecting basic IHL and human rights becomes increasingly more apparent.
The Ministry of Peshmerga, in partnership with Geneva Call and MERI, have started a new initiative to discuss and address the gaps in policy and practice, and explore avenues forward, including Geneva Call’s much anticipated media campaign, “Fighter not Killer.”
